Small Dogs Will Prevail In The World Of The Future

Small dogs will prevail in the world of the future

Dogs are among the best animals in the world, both for their incredible intelligence and for their beauty.

In addition to being faithful to us and making us feel good in every moment spent by their side, dogs come in an enormous amount of breeds, each of which offers particular characteristics.

This aspect continues to be something extraordinary and interesting: since the company of man’s best friend represents something sublime, it is essential that it possesses characteristics similar to us.

Like everything else in this world, over the generations, people have always had certain preferences regarding the type of dog to choose. For example, the hairiest ones, the biggest or the fastest ones.

However, research was recently published which revealed that race diversity will decline in the future.

We will give you more information about this incredible discovery in the remainder of the article.

Revealing research

This is an in-depth study carried out by Dr. Kendy Teng together with her collaborators at the University of Sydney and which has been published in the prestigious journal Canine Genetics and Epidemiology .

During their research, these specialists analyzed how all dog breeds that Australians have had over the past 28 years have evolved.

The most interesting discovery came from the observation of the fact that, since 1986, the demand for small dogs has increased enormously, so much so that the medium and large breeds are far behind.

However, the most peculiar thing is that small breeds mainly include short, broad-headed brachycephalics.

It has been determined that this latter aspect reflects the changes that have occurred in relation to the type of preferred dog in the world, which for example in the 50s and 60s was the Border Collie.

The benefits for veterinarians

To carry out these studies, investigators opted for analyzing the logs of several kennels, although they focused on purebred dogs.

Beyond this aspect, there is certainly that they managed to determine that the number of small and medium-sized dogs increased by 5% compared to large breeds and 11% compared to those of giant size.

Likewise, these researches have greatly helped the work of veterinarians, as they have allowed them to determine the pathologies that a dog may suffer from depending on the breed.

As you can imagine, this is of great help, as it will facilitate the search for a cure for those diseases that do not yet have a highly effective remedy.

According to Dr. Teng, veterinarians show concerns about brachycephalic dogs, as they are used to suffering from respiratory, skin and digestive problems.

The world wants more small dogs

This data is not limited to Australia only; in fact, the results also concern other parts of the world, such as the United States and Great Britain. According to the figures in the possession of the dog breeders association The Kennel Club , in both countries  in the last ten years there has been a multiplication of the purchase and adoption of small dogs.

Why small dogs?

While the study does not explain why people are buying small dogs more in recent decades, we give you a list of the main reasons according to several experts:

  • Thanks to their size, they are more suitable for living in an apartment or in small houses.
  • Also for reasons of size, it is easier to take them everywhere.
  • They are more likely to share their environment with other people or animals.
  • They have a longer life expectancy than large breed dogs.

If the trend continues as it has come to be said, in a few years any child will draw a Bulldog when asked to sketch a picture of a nice little dog.
