How to keep birds away from the garden

Birds are beautiful and useful animals. They play a vital role in the balance of their ecosystems. However, their presence in vegetable gardens, orchards or fields is usually deleterious and can generate economic losses. Therefore, we have decided to give you a series of tips that will help you to keep birds away from the garden. This way, you can protect your flowers, plants and crops.

Tricks to keep birds away from your garden

Fortunately, more and more people decide to have their own vegetable garden or urban garden, to grow their own food organically. Many choose the aesthetics and atmosphere of their home with handmade flowers and plants, without chemical additives. In addition to helping to preserve the environment, it is an excellent investment in the quality of life.

Unfortunately, however, maintaining these “green areas” can be complicated if they are frequently visited by sparrows, pigeons or other birds. Here are some tips to prevent birds from destroying your garden:

1. Ultrasonic scarecrow devices

Currently, you can find various devices effective against insects, birds and mice that take advantage of ultrasonic frequencies.

While this method is unnoticeable to human ears, they usually work great for chasing away unwanted animals. It should also be noted that these devices are not dangerous to your pets if you have any.

2. Visual bird repellents

Pre-made visual repellents are already available on the market, but you can use more affordable, artisanal solutions to prevent birds from ruining your garden’s flowers and plants.

A simple and effective option is to hang a CD or two around the green area to scare them. By reflecting sunlight and giving the impression of movement, they prevent birds from perching on branches.

Another strategy is to install a faux owl as a visual scarecrow in the garden. In garden stores you will find owl-shaped statues – made of plastic, wood or other materials – that fulfill this purpose. In addition, these same companies offer small windmills or moving blades that always serve for the same reason.

It is also possible to opt for the traditional scarecrows, to which we can add some CDs, reels or paddles to improve their effectiveness. However, due to their large size, they are generally recommended for particularly large production fields or orchards.

3. Bird repellent gel

There are also some repellent gels available at garden stores to prevent birds from landing near your house or terrace. These are simple and very effective products.

This gel can be applied to surfaces (such as cornices or balcony railings), but not to plants. Its effect is not toxic to birds, but it keeps them away, because contact with these gels is unpleasant.

If you have pets or small children in the house, you will need to be very careful to prevent the gel from being swallowed. Although the product is not poisonous to contact, its consumption can cause even very serious damage.

4. Bird repellent bags

Another relatively inexpensive option is repellent bags, which can be hung from branches to scare away birds. Again, it is neither toxic nor lethal for these birds. Just use unpleasant fragrances to prevent them from approaching the garden.
