Effective and natural homemade fly repellents

When flies attack a house, the first thing you do is buy a whole range of insecticides, often a bit in bulk. However, these products are often toxic to health as well as the environment. For this reason, we recommend that you learn how to prepare homemade repellents to eliminate flies and prevent their annoying presence.

1. Vinegar repellent

Vinegar – in the image that opens this article – is an acid liquid with a very strong aroma that flies do not like at all. In addition, it contains acetic acid which reduces the movements of these insects if it is sprayed on the upper body.

The ingredients needed are 10 drops of white vinegar, 10 drops of detergent, a cinnamon stick and a cup of water. Mix everything very well and pour it into a bottle with a spray nozzle. You can use it as a repellent and as an insecticide.

Keep in mind that some flies, such as fruit flies, are fanatical about the sour aroma and perhaps the effect will be the opposite of what is expected. Pay attention to the type of insect that flutters around your home before developing this DIY remedy .

2. Repellent with essential oils

This recipe can also be used to ward off other insects, such as mosquitoes. The aromas of essential oils have a very strong deterrent power. For this reason, we advise you to use them in different spaces of the house. For example, you can spray them on curtains and the edges of doors and windows.

You will need 10 drops of each of these oils: lavender, eucalyptus, mint and lemongrass. You will find them in “Bio” shops or herbalists, without problems. Put everything in a container with a spray cap and spray it in the various areas of the house. It will also work outdoors!

Another option is to choose just one of the oils and soak some cotton or gauze with 15 drops. Put everything in a glass jar and cover it for 24 hours. Then remove the cap and leave your jar near the window or door.

3. Garlic repellent

Another example of homemade fly repellent is one made with garlic cloves. Surely you will have some in the kitchen, being an essential ingredient. Insects hate its very distinctive aroma. Hence, flies will be careful not to enter your home.

4. Repellent with aromatic plants

Both inside and outside the house, aromatic plants are ideal for repelling certain insects. Place sprigs of these in your kitchen, balcony, terrace or patio to keep annoying flies away.

What are the best plants for this purpose? Lavender, mint, lemongrass, rosemary, sage, basil and oregano. In addition, in most cases you can also use these herbs for cooking or making infusions.

5. Repellent with vinegar and eucalyptus

Let’s combine two of the above repellents to get an even more effective spray. All you need is half a cup of apple cider vinegar and 20 drops of eucalyptus oil. If you don’t have it, you can choose any of the other essential oils that repel insects.
