French Bulldog: An Affectionate And Intelligent Dog

French Bulldog: an affectionate and intelligent dog

The French Bulldog is a small dog of English origin, despite its name. His temperament and physical characteristics are ideal for those looking for an animal and living in a small apartment.

The curious English origin of the French Bulldog

The origin of this breed is very curious, paradoxically the French Bulldog is originally from England, is related to the English Bulldog and descends from the mastiff type breeds .

During the twentieth century there was no such awareness as the current one in terms of animal protection and many breeds were bred for the purpose of fighting. Some English Bulldog enthusiasts, who were not interested in fighting, began breeding smaller sized Bulldogs which met with little success and were welcomed among the lower social classes as pets.

During the industrial revolution, many of these Brits emigrated to the continent with their miniature Bulldogs, which were warmly welcomed in France.

Physical characteristics of the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is an excellent companion animal for those living in an apartment, as it is small in size, quiet and not very noisy. It is easy to train and needs relatively little movement.

This breed has a rather large, but proportionate head, with distinctive bat-like ears and a flattened snout typical of brachycephalic breeds.

According to the standard, the height at the withers of the French Bulldog is between 27 and 35 centimeters for males and 24 to 32 centimeters for females. As for the weight, it must be proportional to the size, but it is around 12 kilos for males and 11 kilos for females.

Its coat is short, shiny and attached to the body ; it is usually brindle with limited white patches on the body, head and legs.

Character of the French Bulldog

The English standard defines him as lively, affectionate and intelligent; the American one goes further and considers it a good-natured companion animal, adaptable and easy to manage, affectionate and with a balanced mood.

Care

A big advantage of the French Bulldog over other small dogs is that its coat is easy to care for, as a weekly brushing is enough for its short coat to be shiny and clean. It is advisable to cut his nails once a month and if you don’t know how to do it, contact your vet or a dog grooming center.

Health of the French Bulldog

The main health problem of this breed is related to its flattened snout and its breathing capacity. It is a dog that snores and gets tired, so it is necessary to avoid subjecting it to intense physical efforts and it is necessary to promote its cardiovascular capacity with long walks, not runs.

Premature degeneration of the intervertebral discs can be a major problem for this breed. To recognize it, it is enough to know that the symptoms associated with it are strained or strained neck, lameness of the front or hind legs and loss of control of the sphincters.

It is possible to counteract or alleviate this problem, like most, with an early diagnosis by contacting your trusted specialist. The large head size of this breed is a problem during childbirth, often complicated.

For the reasons stated, it is advisable to take the dog to the vet on a regular basis. Ask at the veterinary clinic closest to your home if it is possible to take out insurance, as it is more profitable for more delicate breeds than having to pay for individual visits.
