History of the Norrbotten spitz
The origins of this breed date back to the 17th century, in the Swedish county of Norrbotten, from which it receives its name.

The initial task of this dog breed was to contribute to herding and hunting, including large mammals such as brown bears and moose. In addition, it was also used in the capture of squirrels and in the towing of sleds and small wagons, or as a pet and guardian of land and farms.
During World War I, the Norrbotten spitz found itself close to extinction. However, some specimens had been kept on farms in northern Sweden, and thanks to them the breed managed to survive.
Between the fifties and sixties the population experienced an increase and several breeding programs were created, in order to avoid the disappearance of the national dog. In 1966 he was accepted by the International Cynological Federation.
Characteristics of the Norrbotten spitz
The Norrbotten spitz is a small dog with a compact body and strong muscles. Elegant and with a strong posture, it has a broad back and a well developed chest. Males measure 45 centimeters in length and weigh 15 kilos, while females reach 42 centimeters in height and 12 kilos in weight.
The eyes and the tip of the nose are black, the ears are raised and pointed, and the muzzle is pointed. The tail has a high insertion point: amputation is not allowed. The legs are broad and muscular.
Its fur is hard and short, attached to the body, a little longer under the tail, nape and thighs. The colors can be very varied, but the coat is usually white with reddish or brown spots. The ears and the part surrounding the eyes are usually the same color.
