Pyramidism in turtles: causes, treatment and prevention

Among the various diseases that can affect these reptiles of the Testudines order , pyramidism in turtles is one of the most important. Especially when we consider that it is closely linked to the way these pets are handled. Find out below how to treat  pyramidism in turtles.

What is pyramidism in turtles?

Pyramidism in turtles is a disease that causes deformations in the turtle’s shell. In particular, the different plates that make up this protection grow in an anomalous way. As a consequence, it will be possible to appreciate a particular shape  of the shell, properly called “pyramid”.

This also has consequences for your pet turtle’s internal organs. In fact, the space that the organs can occupy is mainly reduced, affecting the lung capacity of the animal.

In addition, specimens affected by pyramidism are weaker and may have other limb deformities or even suffer from arthritis. The abnormal height of the shell can weigh heavily on the spine, with very serious consequences such as, for example, paralysis.

Main causes of pyramidism in turtles

There are several causes that can trigger this disease, especially frequent in turtles living in captivity. Pyramidism in turtles is due to the fact that most of the animal’s needs are either not met or they are, but in excess.

Probably the most important causes are related to poor nutrition, for example when too much animal protein is fed  to these reptiles. The truth is that most land turtle species should only eat meat occasionally, as they are mostly vegetarian.

It is best to consult your veterinarian (expert in exotic animals) or the store where you bought this pet. They generally consume fruit and vegetables in their basic diet, paying particular attention to the delicate balance between calcium and phosphorus. This is the key to avoiding bone metabolism disease .

Problems related to the absorption of calcium and vitamin D  are also another possible cause of pyramidism. Therefore, you need to ensure your tortoise is adequately exposed to the sun and check with your vet for any problems related to a malfunction of the thyroid gland.

Finally, excess food in the diet, an inadequate level of humidity or the  predisposition to disease by particular species, are other possible causes of the disease.

How to cure and prevent pyramidism in turtles?

There is no treatment for this condition. As you will understand, once the shell is deformed, it is impossible to get it back to its original state.

The best prevention relates to the ability to avoid possible causes of the disease. This means a correct and balanced diet, respecting the needs of the different species of turtles. In general, we recommend a diet based on vegetables and plants, such as dandelion , which can always guarantee a good amount of calcium.

Particular attention should also be paid to the temperature and humidity conditions of the terrarium, even setting up an open area. If this is not possible, it is necessary to leave the turtle free to go out in the garden or on the balcony, at least once a day.

Remember, for any doubts or concerns, to ask your veterinarian for advice. In addition to visiting your pet, he will be happy to give you guidelines for a correct diet, adapted to the needs of the turtle, based on species, size and age.
