The Dog That Takes Care Of Orphaned Chimpanzees

The dog that takes care of orphaned chimpanzees

This is the story of Princess, a dog who was saved from slaughter when she was just over a year old. He was lucky enough to be adopted by Jenny and Jimmy Desmond, a couple who work to save animals in different places around the world. This is also  the story of how a little dog, who knows something about love and second chances, helps her owners in their task, caring for orphaned chimpanzees.

This is how Princess helps orphaned chimpanzees …

When the Desmonds moved to Liberia, Africa, to rescue a large number of these abandoned primates from the New York Blood Center, the dog went with them.

The woman explains that the animals first need to be rehabilitated. Next, they will try to have them live in a natural environment alongside members of their species.

And this is where Princess’s role becomes crucial. The dog comforts them, giving them love, company and friendship. It helps them to reintegrate in an environment that suits them.

The stories of solidarity and friendship between animals of different species always surprise and cheer us up. Below we will talk about how Princess, a dog who has had a second chance in life, takes care of orphaned chimpanzees in Liberia.

The New York Blood Center recently got rid of 66 chimps it used for research. In the 1970s, the NYBC, together with the Biomedical Research Institute of Liberia, had these primates reproduced for use as guinea pigs in their experiments.

Although these organizations have pledged to care for these animals for the rest of their lives, the subsidies have been withdrawn. And it happened just around the time an Ebola epidemic devastated the African country.

The chimps then found themselves without food or water, and without due assistance, until various organizations and volunteers rescued them.

Building a chimpanzee shelter

One of the Desmonds’ goals is to build a shelter for chimpanzees in Liberia. They want to guarantee him adequate care, but also that in the future they can live with others like them in their own situation, not with humans.

To do so, they count on the help and support of various organizations, including that of the Liberian Forest Development Authority.

And, of course, they have the fundamental support of Princess. The little dog, with all her love, comforts them.

Other stories of solidarity and friendship between animals of different species

Animals seem to lack the meanness of some people when it comes to helping others. Here are some stories of friendship and solidarity between different species:

  • A Rhesus Macaque who has taken care of a puppy dog  on the streets of an Indian city.
  • A dog who has adopted kittens who were orphaned  after their mother was run over.
  • A cat who while nursing her kittens, also agreed to do so with hedgehog babies  who had lost their mother.
  • A duck that has made a dog depressed for the death of a fellow dog  with whom he had shared most of his life.
  • A capybara who in a shelter in Arkansas (USA) becomes the adoptive mother of several abandoned litters,  both of dogs and of many other species.

And what about the countless cases of babies or children who are protected by cats or dogs when they are lost or left to their fate? And how thanks to them they manage to escape certain death from hypothermia or other causes.
